Chicago Cubs Hall of Famer Ryne Sandberg gives devastating update on his cancer battle

Baseball Hall-of-Famer Ryne Sandberg has revealed that the prostate cancer he has been battling has spread and that he will require more treatment.

Sandberg, 65, posted the announcement to social media on Tuesday morning.

‘Unfortunately, we recently learned the cancer has relapsed and it has spread to other organs,’ the former second baseman wrote in the post. ‘This means that I’m back to more intensive treatment.

‘We will continue to be positive, strong, and fight to beat this. Thank you for your thoughts and prayers for me and my family.’ 

Back in January, Sandberg announced his prostate cancer diagnosis – insisting that he would continue to ‘fight to beat’ the disease.

Sandberg played 16 major-league seasons, spending almost his entire career with the Cubs.

Throughout his career he amassed a .285/.344/.452 slash line (114 OPS+) and notched roughly 68 Wins Above Replacement. 

A 10-time All-Star, Sandberg won nine Gold Glove awards, seven Silver Slugger Awards, and the 1984 National League Most Valuable Player Award.

Sandberg, nicknamed ‘Ryno’, was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 2005, earning 76 percent of the votes in his third year on the ballot. 

In addition to the Baseball Hall of Fame, Sandberg is also a member of the the Chicago Cubs Hall of Fame, and had his number 23 retired by the Cubs and up on the foul pole at Wrigley Field. 

He started his career with the Philadelphia Phillies but after 13 games in his rookie season, he was traded to the Cubs ahead of the 1982 season.

However, he returned to Philadelphia after stepping away from the plate, spending three seasons from 2013 to 2015 as Phillies manager, posting a mark of 119-159 (.428).
