Harry Brook’s reign at the top of the Test batting table lasts just ONE WEEK as Joe Root deposes his Bazball team-mate to re-take No 1 spot

Harry Brook’s reign as Test cricket’s top-rated batsman lasted just a week after he crashed back down to earth with just one run in England’s huge defeat to New Zealand in Hamilton.

The 25-year-old has been surpassed as No 1 in the rankings by team-mate Joe Root, returning to a position he has held on nine other occasions during his 12-year international career.

Root hit 32 and 54 in the series finale, but the advantage of the Yorkshire duo over the field was cut by their former county colleague Kane Williamson.

A 33rd Test hundred for Williamson saw him pass 1000 runs for the calendar year, closing the gap to Brook in second to just nine points in the process.

Williamson’s tally of 1013, at an average of 59.58, places him sixth in the most prolific players of 2024.

Root tops the list with 1556 at 55.57, with fellow Bazballers Ben Duckett (1149) and Brook (1100) third and fourth respectively.
