The PDC World Championship is one of the most iconic spectacles on the British sporting calendar, with punters flocking in their droves – and often fancy dress – to Alexandra Palace to enjoy the general merriment.
It is traditionally something of an all-day party, with fans regularly hydrating themselves throughout and causing a friendly raucous in the iconic Ally Pally arena in north London.
The fact that the competition takes place around Christmas and New Year only adds to the vibe, with fans – both the hardcore and the casual – getting up on their feet, joining in with chants, and roaring home every arrow.
However one punter seems to have gone viral for their hilarious reaction to being caught on the Sky Sports cameras during Tuesday’s play.
One viewer from home uploaded a video of a fan at Ally Pally which left social media users in stitches, titled: ‘Someone’s pulled a sickie at work’.
The clip sees a fan at the venue enjoying themselves and cheering along with the rest of the crowd as the TV cameras pan across.
The PDC World Championship has become one of the jewels of the British sporting calendar
One darts fan drew the attention of viewers – with one claiming they must be pulling ‘a sickie’
They then see themselves in the screen, and there is a brilliant moment of realisation where you can see the penny drop and the previous joy fade away.
The massive grin slowly turns to something of a grimace, and they turn their face away from the cameras and appear to be trying to look like they aren’t enjoying themselves.
The punter looks off outside the frame of the lens perhaps in a bid to blend in, before a quick glance back at the lens to check whether they’re still in shot – which they of course are.
The comments were filled with fans posting laughing emojis, as well as a few ‘snakes’ too.
Tuesday’s action saw Queen of the Palace Fallon Sherrock knocked out by Ryan Meikle to tee up a clash with teenage sensation Luke Littler.
Littler – named the BBC’s Young Sports Personality of the Year on Tuesday – is looking to go one better from last year, when he was beaten in the final by Luke Humphries.
Two-time champion Peter Wright made it through to the third round too with a 3-1 victory over Wesley Plaisier.
On Wednesday Nathan ‘the Asp’ Aspinall will play in the evening in a round two clash with Leonard Gates.
