  • The tourists are chasing 354 to win after Australia were bowled out for 138
  • Jimmy Anderson took five wickets to give Joe Root’s England a glimmer of hope
  • The England captain led the tourists’ chase with a half-century on day four

A thrilling second Test is balanced on a knife’s edge heading into the fifth and final day after England finally stood up on day four and showed Australia that they might not be so easy to beat in these Ashes after all.

England begin the final day on 176 for four, needing another 178 with six wickets in hand to reach an historic 354 and pull off what would be one of the greatest and most unlikeliest victories in their history.

And at the centre of their chase is a captain in Joe Root who has the perfect opportunity to prove that he truly does belong in the highest company by reaching the three-figure score that would surely take England home.

The England captain resumes on the final day on 67 with nightwatchman Chris Woakes for company and his side still as underdogs but with a fighting chance of giving the Australians an almighty scare in a Test they had dominated.
