Former boxing champion Jamel Herring, who fought in Iraq war, arrested on domestic violence allegations

Jamel Herring, the former boxer who served on two tours to Iraq, has been arrested in Ohio for alleged misdemeanor domestic violence and assault.

The 39-year-old, who retired from boxing in May 2022, was booked into Warren County Jail and records show that he had bail at $50,000 for assault and $75,000 for domestic violence.

His next court date is slated for Jan. 21. Herring, who won the WBO junior lightweight title in May 2019, served two tours in Iraq before returning in 2007 and going into boxing.

‘There were times when I saw things that you’re used to seeing in the movies,’ he told Daily Mail in 2020.

‘There was one time we got attacked with mortar rounds and there were explosions going off all around me. I remember seeing my fellow Marines catching one of the enemies in the act and capturing him and interrogating him.

‘It was the weirdest experience seeing him. Knowing that he was trying to kill us with bombs just yesterday and then to be face to face with him the next day.

‘I really struggled with PTSD (on his return to civilian life). Had it not been for boxing and my Marine family, I may never have got through it.

‘Training helped take my thoughts away from everything I had experienced in Iraq and was still going on in my mind.’

In 2009, Herring lost his two-month old daughter to SIDS (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome).

In the ring, Herring defended his WBO title against Lamon Roach and Carl Frampton before eventually losing to Shakur Stevenson.

He retired from fighting in May 2022 when he lost to Jamaine Ortiz with a record of 24-5.
