The host of hit BBC show The Apprentice had borrowed a friend’s aircraft when an emergency was declared at 41,000ft, as he flew back to London.

He told his Twitter followers he was stranded in Connecticut as he waited for another plane to bring him home.

Lord Sugar tweeted: ‘On my way back to London in a Legacy 650 (not my one – I did owner a favour, lent him my one – long story), anyway at 41,000ft we declare an emergency and have to land.

‘Now stuck in Connecticut waiting for a plane to get me home. The irony of doing a favour.’ 

While it remains unclear what had caused the plane to land, his post unsurprisingly led to a host of witty responses from his followers.

Leon Bridge replied: ‘I have the same problem sometimes in my Ford Fiesta. Stuck in the motorway services. Oh how our lives are so similar.’

Neil Parry tweeted: ‘I lent my mate my Fiesta 1.1L once and he brought it back with a puncture. I was stuck down Caswell Bay for ages but eventually fixed it. We’re very similar Al – virtually twins, some might say.’

And Stacey simply said: ‘Hate it when that happens’.

The tycoon bought his £18.5million 13-seat Embraer Legacy 650 private jet, which has G-SUGA emblazoned across it, in 2010.

Lord Sugar, who has a pilot’s licence, has said he prefers flying privately because he hates the stress of modern travel. 

The jet features three cabin areas and a large bathroom, as well as high speed broadband while in the air, leather chairs and a state-of-the-art entertainment system.
