Barnaby Joyce has confirmed he is ‘separated’ from his wife in an unusual contribution to the same sex marriage debate where he admitted he is ‘no saint’. 

The deputy prime minister was recently the subject of rumours about his love life as he ran for re-election in the seat of New England.

Mr Joyce was forced from Parliament after the High Court found he was a New Zealand citizen by descent when he ran for Parliament.

The campaign was marred with innuendo about Mr Joyce – who has four daughters with his wife Natalie. 

The straight-talking larrikin was only sworn back into high office on Wednesday.  

And Mr Joyce was frank during the parliamentary debate on Thursday afternoon saying: ‘I’m currently separated, so that’s on the record.’ 

He reflected upon how half of all marriages end in failure before reflecting upon his own. 

‘I didn’t come to this debate pretending to be a saint’.
