The former boss of Royal Bank of Scotland has been named chairman of the world’s biggest listed mining firm.

Ross McEwan, who ran the troubled lender from 2013 to 2019, will succeed Ken MacKenzie at BHP in April.

The New Zealand-born banker has been a non-executive director at BHP since April 2024 after five years running National Australia Bank following his RBS stint.

McEwan is also a director at British defence group QinetiQ and Australian bathroom supplier Reece.

He is likely to oversee the process of finding a replacement for chief executive Mike Henry, who is entering his fifth year leading BHP, where tenure in the top job averages six years.
