Kent State University frat student dies after basketball

Kent State University in Ohio is mourning the loss of one of its students after he collapsed and died during a basketball game Wednesday.

Devin Moore, a senior journalism major, was playing basketball at the Student Recreation and Wellness Center when he collapsed on the court during a game.

At first staff attempted CPR but he was apparently still unable to breath. He was then rushed to University Hospitals Portage Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.

The Portage County Coroner is conducting an autopsy to determine the official cause of death. 

Eric Mansfield, executive director of media relations at Kent State, confirmed to FOX 8 News that Moore passed away Wednesday evening.

‘Our thoughts and prayers are with Devin Moore’s family and members of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. as they grieve his tragic passing,’ Mansfield said in a statement.

Kent State community held a vigil for Moore with more than 200 students and faculty members gathered around to honor his life.

Four of his brothers from the fraternity read out a prayer and held a moment of silence for the Cleveland native.

Talea Drummer, dean of students, spoke to the crowd offering messages of peace and love while people held up candles.

She ended her speech with: ‘We will be here for each other, remember what matters and what’s important: Support. Courage. Love. Be there. (SMC) will be there for you.’

The fraternity mourned his death by tweeting 'please pray for the family, friends, the Kent State Community, and our members'

Jared Williams, a friend of Moore’s from University, tweeted: ‘A brother died playing basketball tonight..’

‘Life is entirely short, but I think he definitely lived the best one he could, glad I got to know a great brother in 8th grade, RIP Devin Moore, lost but never forgotten.’ 

Another friend tweeted a photo of the pair with the caption: ‘Can’t believe what I’m hearing, RIP my young dawg Devin Moore,’ he added a heartbroken emoji at the end.
