They say don’t judge a book by its cover – but that hasn’t stopped some from guessing where people are from based off their looks alone.

Content creator Maralee Bell recently asked her followers what makes an American ‘look’ American – before they even speak.

‘Why are American features so instantly recognizable?’ Maralee, who is American but lives in France, asked in a TikTok video.

Her clip was met with a slew of responses, from people sharing the characteristics, mannerisms, and physical attribute they think identify someone as American. 

Maralee first listed the ‘habitual type’ of responses from people that they said make people seem American.

‘A lot of people said Americans lean a lot,’ she shared. ‘When they’re standing they’ll lean on something, or they kind of stand on one foot instead of both.’

The second was that they wear heavier makeup than most other people, and also wear clothes that are more casual than those around them – stating that many are particularly fond of athleisure.

The list didn’t stop there, with Maralee adding ‘carrying a huge water bottle everywhere they go’ as another way of identifying Americans.

‘This person also said American’s are obsessed with being blonde and having super white teeth.

‘Someone also said a lot of Americans tend to look like they’re posing for a photo – even when they’re not.’ 

‘When they’re standing in a crowd they sort of command attention,’ she shared.

Maralee then listed some of the physical attributes that make someone look ‘American,’ according to followers.

‘The way American’s move their mouths,’ she wrote. ‘The smile a lot when they’re talking.’

Maralee added the person also said that people from the US ‘raise their eyebrows’ a lot when they’re taking.

‘I’m doing it right now,’ she exclaimed to camera.

In general, many people said American’s are generally ‘very expressive’ with their movements and expressions as Maralee explained: ‘It’s all just very big.’

‘I’m very curious if these responses are skewed by financial status as the iPhone face or perfect teeth are going to be more common with people that can afford to travel,’ mused someone else. 

Someone else chimed in saying: ‘It’s a studied thing that one of the reasons Americans are so expressive and smile a lot is because of language barriers, and utilizing body language and expressions to communicate friendliness.’
