Car mounts sidewalk and injures six in downtown Manhattan

Six people were hurt when an out-of-control car mounted a sidewalk after smashing into two other vehicles in downtown Manhattan on Thursday.

The crash happened at around 1.20 Thursday afternoon when a Lincoln Town Car and Ford Explorer collided at Broadway and Liberty Street near Zuccotti Park, according to CBS New York.

The Explorer then hit a person riding past on a bike before coming to a halt.

But the Lincoln kept going down Liberty Street before rear-ending a third vehicle and jumping a curb near the World Trade Center and hitting at least five other people.

‘I’m still in shock right now,’ Hector Freytes, who witnessed the set of crashes, told CBS.

‘I look down and look up and see a car make a beeline for that side of the sidewalk, and people diving left and right.’

Another witness Yuehru Chu told the network that the impact ‘pulled the bicycle rack out of the concrete.’

There were no deaths in the immediate aftermath of the crash, and all of the victims were taken to nearby hospitals with non-life threatening injuries.

The driver told police he was experiencing chest pain just after the crash, police told CBS. He was loaded into an ambulance, and is now being held and questioned by police. He isn’t expected to be charged.

The crash was initially being investigated as a road rage incident.

Police told the network that the driver of the town car, who hasn’t been identified, had a medical issue behind the wheel, causing him to lose control of his car.

‘The area of Broadway & Liberty is completely safe,’ New York Police Department’s Mark Locco tweeted less than an hour after the crash.

‘We have traffic closed in all directions so we can conduct an investigation on the collision with @NYPDTransport & @NYPDHighway – avoid driving in the area because of the closure.’

On Thursday night there were still pieces of the mangled car scattered along the sidewalk.

Police were already in the area due to a suspicious package delivered to a business earlier Thursday. Police gave the all-clear after a bomb squad swept through the area.

There is no indication the incidents are related, and the crash is not being treated as an act of terror.
