• Was celebrating 250 games with the Panthers
  • The first player to achieve the milestone with the club
  • Night was ruined by more than just the scoreline

Penrith’s title defence is officially in freefall following a fourth consecutive loss, but it wasn’t just the scoreboard that had fans talking on Friday night.

In a night full of drama and disappointment, the Panthers suffered a 22-18 defeat to the North Queensland Cowboys at CommBank Stadium.

It was a result that stunned fans, as the four-time defending premiers slumped to their worst season start since 2013.

But even before kick-off, there were signs things weren’t going to plan for the reigning champs.

The occasion was meant to be a celebration of club legend Isaah Yeo, who became the first player in Penrith history to play 250 games for the club.

The Panthers co-captain was joined by family for a special pre-game presentation honouring his incredible milestone.

However, fans quickly spotted an embarrassing mistake on Yeo’s commemorative jersey.

In a glaring error, the club had stitched the wrong date — March 4, 2025 — instead of the correct match day, April 4.

What should have been a treasured keepsake for Yeo was marred by a simple proofreading failure.

Veteran league reporter David Lang posted on X: ‘The date is wrong on Penrith’s captain’s 250th First Grade Game special jersey. That will just about do me for the night. Unbelievable!’

Fans were equally scathing in their response to the mix-up, calling it ‘unacceptable for such a big occasion’.

‘Just a month behind like the rest of the team,’ one supporter quipped, summing up the frustration.

‘Someone had one job to proofread, and they couldn’t get it right,’ another added.

The blunder drew comparisons to St George Illawarra’s infamous ‘Dargons’ jersey error last season.

Though not quite as egregious, the Yeo mistake was enough to leave Penrith fans shaking their heads.

To make matters worse, the Panthers let a golden chance slip late in the match.

With the Cowboys clinging to a four-point lead, Casey McLean ignored an unmarked Tom Jenkins and went himself, blowing a likely match-winner.

It was a decision that fans labelled ‘unforgivable’ and one that summed up Penrith’s recent struggles.

Despite the return of Nathan Cleary from concussion and Yeo’s major milestone, the Panthers showed little of the form that made them champions.

Their current 1-4 record places them in dangerous territory, both on the ladder and in terms of morale.

‘There’s something up with the Panthers at the moment, whether management or players, and I don’t know what it is – but it’s doing us harm,’ one frustrated fan wrote.

Penrith must now regroup quickly as they prepare to face the winless Dolphins in Redcliffe on Thursday.
