The boss of troubled spirits giant Remy Cointreau has quit as it grapples with tariffs and a tumbling share price.

After leading the cognac maker for five years, Eric Vallat said he would leave the French group for another project this summer.

A hunt for Vallat’s replacement has been kick-started with chairman Marie-Amelie de Leusse in charge until they are found, the group confirmed.

Shares have dropped 14pc in the past month due to Donald Trump’s threats of a 20pc blanket tariff on imports from the European Union.

The company – which teamed up with The White Lotus actress Aubrey Plaza to promote one of its brands – has struggled after brandy was also embroiled in a trade war between China and the EU last year.

China whacked higher duties on to brandy and whisky after the EU introduced higher levies on Chinese electric vehicles last year. French shipments of cognac to China plummeted by almost a quarter in 2024 compared to the year before.
