Ruben Amorim threw his support behind Andre Onana after the Manchester United goalkeeper blundered in the Europa League draw with Lyon.

Onana was twice at fault as United were held 2-2 in the quarter-finals, conceding an equaliser with the last kick of the game.

Onana had been involved in a pre-match spat with Lyon midfielder Nemanja Matic who branded him one of the worst goalkeepers in United’s history.

But Amorim backed the Cameroon international, saying: ‘I’m really confident in Andre. It can happen. If you play football, you play a lot of games and you can make mistakes.

‘If you look at the season, I make more mistakes than them during these last games and these last months.

‘There’s nothing I can say to Andre in this moment. I didn’t see him, to be honest with you. I use these minutes to try to calm down, to come here to say the right things. It’s normal.’

Asked if the Matic row had unsettled Onana, the United boss added: ‘I don’t know, that can happen.

‘The best thing is to look at the goals, all the actions that Andre had in the game. Talk with (goalkeeper coach Jorge) Vital, this is the best way to help any player.’
