Wedding guests left shocked at ‘very odd’ thing priest said during vows

A group of wedding guests were left shocked by the ‘very odd’ remark a priest said while reading the vows. 

Taking to the Reddit thread r/weddingshaming, user @nafecruss said he was attending a Catholic wedding for his friend’s daughter in North Jersey a few years ago when he and his wife overheard some surprising words from the priest. 

Though they were sat towards the back of the church, only he and his wife appeared to hear the remarks – and the wedding went on ‘without any other surprises’. 

Unable to withhold his frustrations, he asked the nearby table at the reception if they’d also heard it. 

They confirmed that they’d also heard it – and put it down to him ‘forgetting what he was saying’. 

The priest had simply said ‘blah blah blah’ in the middle of reading the vows.  

Though the original poster said he was ‘still laughing years later’, not everyone in the comments was convinced, even saying the priest was ‘unprofessional’ and risked ‘ruining’ the wedding entirely. 

The Reddit user explained: ‘A few years ago my wife and were invited to my friend’s daughter’s wedding. It was a full Catholic Mass and service.

Taking to Reddit, one user said that the priest had simply gone ‘blah blah blah’ in the middle of the vows

‘It was up in North Jersey, and a few of us were friends from South Jersey. It was an enormous church and since we only knew the bride’s immediate family we sat towards the back. The Mass is going on, gets to the marriage section and the priest is talking to the couple. 

‘As he’s talking I hear him say something very odd. I look at my wife and ask if she heard what I heard. She did. Nobody else seemed to hear it, and the wedding went off without any other surprises.’

Luckily, when he got to the reception, other people had also heard the bizarre comment.

The Reddit user concluded: ‘While talking through the service with all the solemnity of the occasion, apparently he forgot what he was saying and just said “Blah Blah Blah”. Still laughing years later.’

People soon rushed to the comments to explain what they thought had happened.  

They said: ‘I guess he’s done too many weddings and stopped caring a while back’; 

‘Hey we can’t be employee of the month every month’;

‘Wtf how unprofessional. It would’ve ruined the ceremony imo, if I were in the groom’s place.’ 

Others shared their own experiences, with one person writing: ‘When I got married, my now ex mil insisted on getting her favorite priest (catholic) out of retirement to do the wedding… He forgot more than 1/2 the marriage mass and my name … multiple times.’

Others said: ‘When my husband and I got married, one of our friends got ordained to be our officiant. He dropped an F-bomb during our ceremony. My Catholic family was shocked. My husband’s family thought it was hilarious’;

‘The best one I heard was during a high brow wedding held by a priest who had been in the Legion and still retained the rough edges 

‘When he reached the part about being fruitful he said: “So, let’s talk about sex.”

‘I nearly choked, trying to hold back laughter. The assembly was too polite to react but you could see the ones who knew the priest and the rest clutching their pearls.’
