A woman has died and a man has been shot following a multi-vehicle crash on a highway in Queensland.

Emergency services rushed to the Bruce Highway in Palmview at about 12.10pm on Monday following reports of a crash.

Queensland Police said a red Porsche Macan crashed, causing a multi-vehicle collision in the southbound lanes.

A woman and man, who were in another vehicle, were injured in the crash.

The woman has since died, while the man was rushed to hospital with serious injuries.

Police allege a man armed with a gun exited the Porsche after the crash and approached a white SsanYong Rexton.

The man then allegedly shot the driver of the Rexton in the arm before stealing the car and fleeing the scene.

It is not believed the two men were known to each other.

Police located the Rexton crashed in Landsborough, near Forestry Road, at about 12.35pm.

The man then allegedly stole another car, a grey Mazda 3,  but was arrested a short time later near Steve Irwin Way.

Police allege the gun used to shoot the Rexton driver was found inside the Mazda 3.

Three crime scenes were established including one in Palmview and two in Landsborough.

An investigation into the circumstance surrounding the incident is underway and anyone with information is being urged to contact police.

Chief Inspector Jason Overland said the investigation would be complex as it involved multiple crime scenes, many witnesses as well as dashcam footage.

‘It’s just terrible… resulted in the death of a young girl,’ he said.

‘I’ve given up trying to work out why, it’s just a tragedy and we’re doing all that we can to address what’s left.

‘I’m not going to speculate on what causes people to do these things.’

All southbound lanes of the Bruce Highway before the Pignata Road Overpass remain closed, with motorists being warned to expect significant delays.
