Roy Keane has joked that Kevin De Bruyne should join Manchester United in the summer for one particular reason after the midfielder refused to rule out staying in the Premier League.

Speaking to the written media on Saturday evening, De Bruyne revealed that he was shocked and surprised when he was informed by City’s Director of Football, Txiki Begiristain and CEO, Ferran Soriano during a brief meeting that his contract would not be renewed. Pep Guardiola was involved in the decision but not a part of the meeting where De Bruyne was informed.

‘There was a little bit (of shock),’ admitted De Bruyne. ‘I didn’t have any offer from them through the whole year and the club made a decision. Obviously, I was a bit surprised but I have to accept it. Honestly, I still think I can perform at this level like I’m showing but I understand that clubs have to make decisions,’ the Belgian added.

‘I’m open for anything (next) because I have to look at the whole picture. I’m looking at sporting reasons, family and everything together and what makes the most sense for me and my family. I still feel like I can play at a good level, but after I’ll have to make a decision once I really know a little bit more.’

There have been suggestions in the fallout since that De Bruyne could therefore stay in the top flight, having previously been linked with the likes of the MLS and the Saudi Pro League.

It would be hard for most fans to imagine the playmaker in another Premier League shirt in his post-City career, but that is now a realistic possibility. Former United captain Keane, meanwhile, is eyeing up a move.

‘He has lit up the Premier League for so long’ former Newcastle goalkeeper Shay Given said during Sky Sports’ coverage of City’s game against Aston Villa on Tuesday night. ‘Kevin will admit he is not at his peak but you can see he still has a lot to offer. He can turn up at another Premier League club and that is a concern for City.

Keane interrupted: ‘United? He wouldn’t have to move house.’

Given continued: ‘If he thinks he is still good enough he might think he can have another season in the Premier League.’

De Bruyne has struggled with injuries recently, managing 24 Premier League appearances so far this season, but just 18 last term – less than half.

He is one of a number of City players who are now the so-called wrong side of 30 – and Keane is not surprised that the club are now looking to move him on.

‘We know how ruthless Man City can be at a certain age,’ he continued. ‘Give him time one the ball and he will punish you, all he needs is a moment.

‘As much as you try and stop him, you can’t in certain areas.’
