Ryanair has just launched new flights to one of France’s prettiest hidden gems that’s known for its incredible natural beauty.

The budget airline is now flying to Clermont-Ferrand in central France from London Stansted with one-way flights costing just £14.99. Ryanair’s flight to the city took off on April 20.

The little-known city is at the heart of France’s Auvergne-Rhone-Alpes region which is an ideal destination for hikers.

The region is home to the Chaine des Puys mountain range, a chain of dormant ancient volcanoes which are now covered in greenery and wild flowers.

Lonely Planet celebrates the area’s ‘exhilarating views’ and recommends tourists visit to explore a ‘geological jigsaw of granite plateaus and glacier-sculpted valleys, puckered by dozens of sleeping volcanoes’.

Often described as the ‘jewel’ of the Chaine des Puys network, Puy de Dome is its highest point and a must-see for tourists visiting the area.

The majestic volcano peaks at 1,465m/4,806 ft and offers incredible views of the surrounding landscape.

Those who can’t face the hike to the top can hop onboard the panoramic railway for a quick train ride to the summit.

Visitors also won’t want to miss the Chapelle St-Michel d’Aiguilhe, Le Puy’s oldest chapel which clings to the top of an 85m/278 foot high volcanic plug.

But the city centre of Clermont-Ferrand also has some incredible attractions to add to your bucket list.

Cathedrale Notre Dame is Lonely Planet’s top recommendation. Built out of volcanic stone, the cathedral was constructed between the 13th and 19th century.

Tourists can enjoy 360-degree city views from its tower during the summer months.

The city’s Notre Dame Du Port basilica is a UNESCO World Heritage site with intricate mosaic designs inside.

And while tourists might not have heard of Clermont-Ferrand, they will recognise the name of a very famous brand that started life there.

The Michelin brothers founded their iconic tyre brand in the French city and today tourists can explore its history at L’Aventure Michelin.

The quirky museum dives into the lives of the brothers and offers interactive displays about car manufacture.

When it comes to eating out, truffade is the region’s most famous dish. The thick pancake is made from thinly sliced potatoes cooked in goose fat.

Another regional speciality is hearty aligot, an indulgent dish of mashed potatoes blended with cheese.
