EasyJet and Ryanair passengers are being warned to think carefully about what they pack in their hand luggage or risk being slapped with costly airport fines.

Budget airlines have become especially popular with savvy flyers who hope to avoid extra hold luggage fees by downsizing to under-seat cabin bags.

Though this can be a convenient way to save money, costs can quickly skyrocket at the gate if luggage exceeds the allowed weight, size, or quantity.

Passengers who choose to travel with only an under-seat cabin could be hit with hefty fees of £46 or more if their luggage exceeds regulations by so much as a centimetre.

To help passengers avoid these surprise charges, Matthew Corrigan, CEO of travel brand Trtl Travel, has offered practical advice.

Speaking to the Express, the expert said that while travelling with only under-seat luggage can be a smart way to keep costs down, the limited space means people need to be much more selective about what they bring.

According to Corrigan, three of the most common packing mistakes involve everyday items that are already provided by the majority of hotel chains, or alternatively can be purchased at the destination.

He advised: ‘Avoid packing items that will be provided by the accommodation – such as hairdryers, towels, and toiletries.

‘Only bring items you know you’ll use, and try to share phone chargers and other technology wherever possible.’

The expert urged holidaymakers to recheck their hotel’s amenities before taking off.

For those travelling to colder destinations, Corrigan also advised wearing heavier clothing, such as coats and chunky jumpers, onto the plane rather than trying to squeeze them into limited cabin luggage space.

He said: ‘It’s best to wear large items such as jumpers and coats onto the plane. This frees up space and ensures you don’t get cold during the flight.’

Meanwhile, a millionaire has shared five essential things he does at the airport before every flight – tips that he claims can save the average traveller thousands.

Mark Tilbury, from Oxfordshire, is a self-made, self-proclaimed millionaire, and is the CEO of Model World LTD, Century U.K. LTD and Tilbury Multi-Media LTD, as per his LinkedIn profile.

In a recent video uploaded to his Youtube channel, the entrepreneur highlighted a series of hacks to help save the average plane passenger money at the airport.
