Tyson Fury could be tempted out of retirement for a ‘generational’ – and long-overdue – clash against Anthony Joshua.

Fury hung up his gloves for a fourth time in January after suffering a second consecutive defeat at the hands of Oleksandr Usyk, but speculation has mounted that he could make a dramatic comeback after returning to full training.

The Gypsy King revealed earlier this year that he has undertaken twice-daily sessions, despite both he and his camp insisting he has stepped away for good.

Fury has come out of retirement on multiple occasions before, and his latest announcement at the start of the year was met with some scepticism by fans.

In addition to Usyk, Fury has fought the likes of Deontay Wilder and Wladimir Klitschko but an all-British clash against Joshua could never be secured.  Promoter Frank Warren believes that this landmark bout could be enough to bring Fury back once more.

‘He’s with his family, enjoying life,’ Warren told Sky Sports. ‘I haven’t spoken to him about returning to boxing and I wouldn’t. If he does decide to then I’ll support him, if he doesn’t then I’ll support that.

‘He’s been a magnificent servant to boxing, two-time world champion, he’s very well off, set up for life, doesn’t need to box. But the thing with Tyson is he is a fighting man so you never know what will happen.’

‘[Fighting Joshua] would tempt all of us, to get him to do it,’ he added. ‘That’s the fight everybody wants to see, a generational fight.

‘I know AJ wants it, Tyson at one stage did want it and we were close but it didn’t happen. You never know what can happen in boxing.’

Joshua was sensationally knocked out by Daniel Dubois in five rounds in front of 96,000 fans at Wembley Stadium on September 21 after being dropped multiple times.

The two heavyweights have entered negotiations on several occasions but the ‘Battle of Britain’ bout is still to materalise. They came agonisingly close to squaring off in 2020, however, after both fighters held all four major belts between them.

But a judge in the US then ruled that Fury had to honour his contract to fight Wilder for a third time, leading to his date with destiny with Joshua being scrapped.

Joshua was then ordered to face Usyk and lost his IBF, WBO and WBA belts.

Fury also pinned the blame on AJ’s shock knockout defeat to Daniel Dubois last year for derailing the fight, shouting ringside: ‘That’s cost me £150million, the silly c***.’
