Ruben Amorim admits nothing can save Manchester United’s season as he bids to move one step closer to winning the Europa League on Thursday.

United take on Athletic Bilbao in the semi-final at the Estadio San Mames hoping to return to the same venue for the final later this month.

But Amorim accepts that even a European trophy wouldn’t make United’s season a success, even though it would secure qualification to the Champions League and a £100million jackpot to spend on new signings this summer.

‘We know nothing is going to save our season,’ said Amorim on Wednesday night. ‘Europa League will not change anything in our problems. It’s going to give us Champions League next year, more money to spend, but the problems are still there.

‘It’s more of a shortcut to go to the European games (next season), nothing more. We need to solve the problems in a different way with more time and we’re really clear on that.

‘We have to change the minds of our fans with consistency, good decisions, good recruitment, good academy. This is what we need to change to take our club back to the top.’

Midfielder Manuel Ugarte agreed with Amorim but insisted that United are still determined to end the season on a high note.

‘As the head coach said, this is not going to save the season, but the history of United is written with titles,’ said Ugarte.

‘That’s why we’re focused very much on tomorrow and to be able to play in the Champions League next season. It’s very important and altogether we’re going to try and win.’
