• Journalist Mark Robinson singled out Garry Lyon
  • Felt commentator just ‘reads stats and numbers’
  • Pair haven’t seen eye-to-eye over many years

A scathing Facebook post has opened up a new latest chapter in the ongoing feud between footy identity Mark Robinson and Melbourne Demons legend Garry Lyon.

The pair have been at loggerheads for decades and Robinson – who was the chief football writer for News Corp’s Herald Sun in Melbourne between 2011 to 2024 – didn’t miss the Melbourne Demons great with his most recent shot.

On May 3 via his public Facebook page, Robinson posted: ‘Garry Lyon’s entire commentary is reading stats.

‘It is not ‘expert’ opinion, it is rwading (sic) numbers. (Jason) Dunstall, meanwhile, doesn’t use any numbers in his analysis. He speaks about the essence of the game.’

While Lyon is yet to respond to Robinson’s jibe, he would almost certainly be aware of it given the pair’s history.

The pair were former colleagues at Fox Sports before Robinson was sensationally removed as host of AFL 360 after 15 years on the show in 2024.

Robinson was then replaced by Lyon.

Back in 2023, Robinson had another crack at the champion centre half-forward after Lyon referenced a match where he booted 10 goals for the Demons in a final.

It was tongue in cheek when analysing a game dominated by Carlton star Charlie Curnow, who kicked six goals against Collingwood.

Robinson felt Lyon was being self-indulgent – and unloaded in a column at the time.

‘Charlie Curnow kicked six goals and looked every ounce the most exciting and dominant forward in the game….and what does Garry Lyon slip into commentary on Fox Footy? His own 10 goals he kicked in a final,’ Robinson wrote in 2023.

‘It should’ve been all about Curnow, especially so immediately after the game.’

Lyon soon responded on SEN Radio, labelling the column ‘one of the more embarrassing things I’ve seen written by a journalist.’

He wasn’t finished yet, questioning Robinson’s professional credibility, which he was felt was ‘waning.’

Aside from his feud with Robinson, Lyon has also raised eyebrows with some footy fans after he started dating Nicky Brownless, the ex-wife of his close friend Billy Brownless in 2016.

Lyon blindsided his best mate by starting a relationship with his former wife of 18 years, just 12 months after they separated.

In 2023, Lyon and Brownless announced their engagement.
