An OIympian who went viral for her alleged conduct at the Paris Games last summer has announced her return to her sport on Instagram.

Luana Alonso, who represented Paraguay in the 100m butterfly during the Olympic Games, saw her glamorous posts gain massive popularity during the tournament as she shared snaps from the French capital and posed with fellow Olympians such as Rafael Nadal.

But in a mysterious incident, Alonso was removed from the Olympic village before the end of the tournament for creating an ‘inappropriate atmosphere’.

The 21-year-old later announced her retirement in the wake of the games, where she had failed to qualify for the semi-finals in her event, launching an OnlyFans account in the aftermath.

But the Paraguayan former athlete could yet return to the pool in the future, with the internet star posting a cryptic response to a question asked by one of her fans on Monday.

‘Is there a chance you are back to swimming competitions? Especially Olympics?’ one follower asked via Alonso’s Instagram Stories.

‘Next year I’m coming back,’ Alonso revealed, before adding: ‘but I don’t know if I will be back to competitive swimming.’

Alonso has previously competed at the Tokyo Olympics in 2021, where she similarly failed to progress to the semi-finals after finishing 28th overall.

Controversy swirled around Alonso’s departure from the French capital midway through the Games after reports emerged that team chiefs were believed to have had an issue with the swimmer distracting her team-mates, scheduling trips in Paris away from the village, and sporting her own choice of outfits rather than wearing the team’s uniforms.

Alonso herself posted a missive on social media that claimed she ‘didn’t want to make a statement’ but was ‘not going to let the lies affect me either’.

Comments from the President of the Paraguayan Olympic Committee on a national radio show appeared to indicate that the decision to remove her came after she made a trip to Disneyland Paris.

Meanwhile, the Paraguayan digital newspaper Hoy reported that Luana had spoken about her reluctance to represent Paraguay on a livestream prior to the Games, instead expressing a desire to represent the United States.

She later addressed her expulsion, stating that she had indeed left the Games but had done so of her own free will.

She said: ‘I made the decision to stop and I am happy that my last race will be at the Olympics.

‘I am going to go to study in the United States, I am going to continue my career in Political Science and, why not, be Sports Minister one day.’
