A Crystal Palace star has revealed what he said to Erling Haaland after the Manchester City forward opted to hand over a penalty in the FA Cup final.

Haaland raised eyebrows when he opted not to take the spot kick that Bernardo Silva had earned at Wembley. If it had gone in, it would have seen City draw the game – which they lost 1-0 – level.

After Eberechi Eze had opened the scoring for Palace, Tyrick Mitchell was adjudged to have tripped Silva in the box, with a penalty awarded. Many on-lookers expected Haaland to take it.

The City player held the ball under his arm while the VAR check took place, and even kissed the ball. He has scored four out of seven spot kicks for City so far this season.

He instead, though, passed the ball to Marmoush, who had a fine record for former side Frankfurt. He saw his effort saved by hero of the day Dean Henderson.

Now, a Palace defender, who also impressed in the final, has revealed he spoke to Haaland on the pitch and found out why he didn’t take the kick.

‘I asked him why he didn’t take the penalty, since he was the team’s top scorer,’ Daniel Munoz told 10 Sports Colombia.

‘And he told me that his team-mate was also a good kicker. So, I told him, “If you don’t take the penalty, he’ll miss.” And he missed.’

Alan Shearer said on BBC Sport commentary of the game: ‘That is a big decision from Erling Haaland. Not to want that penalty.’

When asked if he could have been ordered to pass the kick on, Shearer said: ‘Well he’s on the pitch, he’s fit enough to start the game, so he’s either said he doesn’t want it or Pep (Guardiola) doesn’t want him to take it. That is a big surprise to me, though.’

Haaland has scored just four of his last seven penalties for City, while Marmoush, prior to Saturday, had scored his last seven. This, though, was his first for the club he joined in January.

‘Not at all,’ Shearer added when it was suggested Haaland should not have given the ball to Marmoush. ‘Not when you are in his position. Erling Haaland, who and what you are.

‘He has scored 30 goals this season. I’m only speaking from a personal point of view but I wouldn’t be willing to give a penalty up in a cup final, no chance.’

At half-time, the punditry team, including Wayne Rooney and Gary Lineker, also debated the decision. I don’t think he’s given it away,’ Rooney said. ‘I think it’s been taken off him.’

Lineker added: ‘I can’t imagine that Haaland said he didn’t fancy it.’
