Kevin De Bruyne shockingly missed an open goal from just yards out against Bournemouth on his final Manchester City home appearance.

The Belgian crashed the ball against the crossbar with a left footed strike from inside the six-yard-box after Omar Marmoush fed him in from across the box in the first-half.

Manchester City fans were left in stunned silence, while Pep Guardiola clasped his hands in his head in disbelief.

Cameras at the Etihad showed De Bruyne’s family looking astonished as his miss was replayed on the big screens.

De Bruyne himself looked flabbergasted at his failure to bury the chance.

‘You only had to see Kevin De Bruyne’s face. I don’t think anybody in this stadium can quite believe what happened,’ Chris Sutton said on Sky Sports.

‘The stadium’s gone quiet. The irony is that when he missed the effort he still got a round of applause. It’s a rarity that.’

The 33-year-old was still roundly applauded by City fans following the glorious opportunity.

De Bruyne, who is captaining Pep Guardiola’s side against Bournemouth, is making his final home appearance after spending a decade in Manchester.

Omar Marmoush opened the scoring in the 14th minute with a remarkable long range effort.

The Egyptian picked the ball up from near the halfway line, running into centre of Bournemouth’s half, before firing into the top left corner from 30-yards away.

Bernardo Silva doubled their lead seven minutes before half-time after slotting his strike in at the near post after a Ilkay Gundogan cut back.

City sat in sixth place in the Premier League ahead of their clash with the Cherries as they look to secure Champions League qualification for next season.

De Bruyne has scored 108 goals and won 19 trophies, including the Champions League, with City but will leave the club at the end of the season once his contract expires.

He was unable to seal a trophy in his final season at the club after Crystal Palace pipped City to the FA Cup last weekend.

A win against Andoni Iraola’s side would see City occupy third spot ahead of the final day, where they travel to Fulham, knowing a draw would almost guarantee a top-five finish.
