The body of a homeless guy has been found inside an industrial bin behind a Salvation Army store.

Police were called to the premises in the Hobart suburb of Bellerive on Monday morning after a garbage contractor made the grim discovery.

Detectives have since identified the deceased man, 45, and are trying to ascertain his movements since Saturday night, when he was last seen alive.

Police and forensic officers spent much of Monday at the scene on Percy Street.

At least 60 people were interviewed by police as part of their ongoing investigations.

The bin was located at the rear of the store, an area that was frequented by the homeless.

‘The garbage contractor attended the business premises as he normally would do,’  Detective Inspector David Gill told reporters.

‘He actually lifted the lids on a number of large bins and found the male.

‘This was a large size industrial waste bin and the contractor observed what he initially thought was a mannequin display.’

The man was last seen alive by his children at about 7pm Saturday night.

Police confirmed the man was known to them and had been homeless for at least several months.

The man was known to frequent the Bellerive and Rosny areas.

How the man died remains a mystery.

His body was found with no physical injuries.

It’s hoped an autopsy on Tuesday will provide some answers.

‘Right now, the scene suggests that this could be a case of death by misadventure, or alternatively, foul play or possibly a combination of both,’ Det Insp Gill said

Anyone with information, CCTV or dashcam of Percy Street is urged to contact Crime Stoppers.
