Moore would ‘harken us back to the days of segregation’

Rep. Terri Sewell, the only Congressional Democrat from Alabama, said Sunday that the race between Republican Roy Moore, accused of preying on teenagers, and Democrat Doug Jones is a fight for the ‘soul’ of Alabama and the nation.

‘And this candidate, Roy Moore, will only take us backwards and harken us back to the days of segregation and Doug Jones will take us forward,’ the Democratic lawmaker charged.

But it was the Jones campaign, pointed out ABC’s Martha Raddatz, that was responsible for putting out a racially-tinged mailer.

Rep. Terri Sewell is the only Democrat and lawmaker of color representing Alabama in Washington, D.C. She suggested that if her state voted for embattled Senate candidate Roy Moore, a Republican, it could ‘harken us back to the days of segregation’

The campaign flyer showed a black man on the front of it with his eyebrow raised.

‘Think if a black man went after high school girls anyone would try to make him a senator?’ the ad asked.

Sewell is not only the sole Democrat representing Alabama in Congress, but she’s also the only U.S. lawmaker from the state who is black.

‘Listen, ads don’t, mailers don’t vote, it’s people who vote,’ she replied. ‘And I really believe that the folks of Alabama will see through all of this nonsense about Roy Moore.’

Raddatz had pointed out, however, just how serious the allegations are about Moore, a former Alabama Supreme Court judge.

‘Why is this race even close?’ the news woman asked.

‘Listen, the state of Alabama voted for this president by 28 points,’ Sewell pointed out. ‘The fact that we are closed and narrowed in to a statistical dead heat is really important.’

Sewell also stood up for the accusers, who Moore’s chief political strategist Dean Young had said weren’t telling the truth in the segment directly before.

‘There’s no reason to doubt these women,’ she said. ‘Independent corroboration, contemporaneous accounts, and eight people who didn’t know each other.’

‘Listen, the people of Alabama deserve a senator whose character and integrity and veracity won’t be in question day one in the United States Senate,’ Sewell said.

‘At the end of the day they’re putting party before people, party before principle,’ she added.
