• Luke Littler and Luke Humphries lost their first match at the World Cup of Darts
  • Gerwyn Price believes their lack of team ethic proved to be England’s downfall
  • Littler and Humphries were playing together for the first time and failed to deliver

Welsh darts star Gerwyn Price took aim at English pair Luke Littler and Luke Humphries after they flopped at the World Cup of Darts.

Littler and Humphries – the two highest-ranked players in the world – arrived as the overwhelming favourites to win the World Cup for England.

But it all went wrong for them as they lost their opening match 8-4 to hosts Germany to crash out of the tournament. Littler and Humphries both looked a shadow of the players who have dominated darts in recent years, and Price feels a lack of team unity was the reason behind their downfall.

Speaking at a press conference on Sunday evening, Price revealed: ‘When we turned up on the first day, and I’m not just saying this because they lost, but the only two players that didn’t turn up together, didn’t sit together, didn’t play as a team – I’m not saying who they are – but they didn’t win their first game.

‘You need to turn up together, you need to be as a team, you practice together, you sit together, it’s a team ethic. It didn’t show with England, and it showed on the board.

‘They are great players individually, but you need to be a team.’

At this point, Price’s Wales team-mate Jonny Clayton teased him by replying: ‘I thought you weren’t going to say who they were!’ before bursting into laughter.

The cat was out the bag by now, but Price doubled down, adding: ‘You need that team ethic. You need to be as a team all the way through but it didn’t happen.

‘I wanted them to do well but they didn’t. I’m not just saying that to make some fans. I wanted them to do well but they were rubbish!’

Price and Clayton made it all the way to the final, but were denied victory after losing a final-leg decider to Northern Ireland.

They went a lot further than Littler and Humphries, though, who had a World Cup to forget.

Their World Cup humiliation came just hours after they had both received an MBE for their services to darts.

Littler and Humphries have shared the last two world titles, but Price believes they still have a long way to go if they are going to succeed as a team in future World Cups.

Littler, Humphries and Price will all return to competing against each other in the coming weeks, and could come face to face on the big stage when the World Matchplay gets underway in Blackpool next month.
