The 10 suburbs with MOST gay couples are all in same area

Less than 10 kilometres separates the country’s suburbs with the highest population of male couples, new ABS figures have revealed.

Notorious for its messages of diversity and equality, its no surprise Australia’s long-time gay capital, Sydney, is home to the highest number of same sex pairs.

More than 60% of the nation’s gay couples reside in New South Wales – and the 10 suburbs with the highest population of male couples all happen to be within seven kilometres of the CBD.

Sydney is home to the highest number of same sex pairs nationwide, and 10 suburbs with the highest population of male couples all within seven kilometres of the CBD

Darlinghurst ranks in with the highest number of male couples nation-wide, with 17.9% soaking up convenient proximity to Oxford Street’s lively gay party scene.

The hot spot is followed closely by Elizabeth Bay, as 16.5% of male couples reside in the affluent harbourside suburb.

Surry Hills was close behind, home to 16.3% of the nation’s gay couples – who still enjoy a journey of less than two kilometres to the prominent party district.

Inner city suburbs Potts Point, Redfern, Wooloomooloo and Erskineville all made it into the top 10 as well, along with Waterloo, Alexandria and Newtown.

Female same-sex couples were found to prefer central Sydney living too, favouring the inner-west suburb of Saint Peters, along with Erskinville, Darlington and Newtown.

Daylesford in the Great Dividing Ranges was the only Victorian suburb with a high enough number of female couples to make the top 10, with Ethelton in Adelaide’s north-west the only South Australian suburb.

The report was released less than a week after Federal Parliament’s historical decision to legalise same-sex marriage from January 9, 2018.

Almost two-thirds (63%) of same-sex couples lived in New South Wales or Victoria, compared to 57% of all couples, in a census conducted last year.

More than 47,000 of same sex couples were found to be living together in 2016 – a staggering 82% jump from up just 10 years prior.
