Ice rink fails to open while UK is hit by big freeze

  • An ice skating rink in Canterbury has been delaying its opening for two weeks
  • Customers have been left out of pocket from buying tickets for the deserted rink
  • Kym Amos paid £135 for 24 schoolchildren to skate but the attraction was closed

A planned festive skating rink is still on ice as it’s nearly a fortnight late in opening, leaving paying customers furious.

The pop up festive attraction in Canterbury was meant to be open at the start of December but the project still looks nowhere near completion.

Although Britain’s big freeze is set to be replaced by milder weather in the coming week, a marquee has been erected and boards put down.

‘A complete shambles’: The ice rink opening has been delayed for two weeks, with customers paying for tickets even though it is still closed

But there is still no sign of any ice or work being done at the deserted skating venue.

The continued delays has been branded a “complete shambles” as customers complained they have paid money for bookings on dates that have come and gone.

Many were left angered after the booking website was prematurely made live to the public and are still awaiting a refund.

Kym Amos had paid £135 for 24 schoolchildren from St Stephen’s Juniors to use it on Monday, but it had yet to open and operators failed to respond to her emails.

The school’s family liaison officer Mrs Amos said: “It was meant to be a treat for the children, who were very disappointed when we had to tell them it wouldn’t be happening.

“Since then I have had no response from the company about getting our money back.

“It’s a complete shambles.

“It was such a shame for our children but fortunately we were able to take them to Play Islands in Wincheap, which kindly accommodated us at short notice so at least they had a treat.”

The launch of the rink was initially put back from December 1 to Saturday December 9 and then to Monday, December 11.

But on Wednesday there was no sign of any ice on the rink or any work being carried out.

The attraction is being run by company Noah and the Shed.

The city council says it has allowed the firm to use its land for the rink, but is playing no part in the attraction’s operation.
