One person dead and more injured after a balcony collapse

One woman is dead and 18 people have been injured after a balcony collapsed during a Christmas party in Melbourne Saturday night.

Victoria Police said they believe more than 30 people were standing on the timber balcony when it collapsed. 

The woman, who is yet to be identified, died at the scene.

Several people were also trapped after the balcony collapsed at about 10.30pm in Doncaster East, about 22 kilometres east of Melbourne.

One woman aged in her 30s is in a serious condition in hospital with ‘life-threatening injuries’.

Police said 17 other people were rushed to hospital with varying injuries. 

Ambulance Victoria said 10 women and seven men aged between 20 and 69-years-old sustained soft tissue injuries, fractures and lacerations and were transported to a number of hospitals.

‘This is a very tragic incident for those involved and our thoughts are with them and their loved ones at this time,’ State Health Commander Paul Holman said.

There were another 12 people who were treated at the scene but did not need hospitalisation.

Photos show dozens of emergency service vehicles lining the streets of the residential area with people flooding to the road.  

Furniture including a barbecue and fridge were on the balcony when it collapsed, leaving ‘walking wounded’ in the street.  

One witness told The Herald Sun he was shocked by the tragedy.

‘This is just a typical quiet Eastern suburbs neighbourhood,’ he said.
