Bristol City 2-1 Nottingham Forest: Early goals prove key

Bristol City maintained their place at the top end of the Championship with a tight victory over Nottingham Forest.

Two first-half goals were enough to hold off a comeback by the visitors, who remain outside the top ten.

Bristol City manager Lee Johnson put in Hordur Magnusson and dropped Niclas Eliasson to the bench.

His opposite number, Mark Warburton, made two changes – Mustapha Carayol made his first start of the season, replacing Barrie McKay, while Greek midfielder Andreas Bouchalakis replaced Ben Osborn.

The home side showed their first sign of attacking intent after five minutes, when Marlon Pack fed Bobby Reid into the box, but the marksman was unable to control the ball long enough to get a shot in.

At the other end, Bristol City keeper Frank Fielding had to touch away a low drive from Daryl Murphy after nine minutes.

Reid was again involved after twelve minutes, when he was poised to connect to a Joe Bryan cross from the left – however he failed to properly connect with an acrobatic effort, putting the ball comfortably wide.

The home side were generally on top, with Forest more content to soak up the pressure from the hosts.

There was a spark of inspiration from Carayol on 32 minutes, when he picked the ball up from about thirty yards out to drive through into the box unchallenged. However, his effort was spoiled when reaching the six yard box, as he fired his resulting shot well over the bar.

After Reid forced a save from Jordan Smith, the home side made Forest and Carayol pay on 36 minutes, when Marlon Pack drove home from over twenty five yards, to give Bristol City a deserved lead.

Smith was forced to make a double save before the break from Jamie Paterson and a Pack header, but was beaten again with another long range effort, from Joe Bryan.

Nottingham Forest needed a quick response after the break, and received it two minutes after the restart – Kieran Dowell picked up the ball in midfield, and was able to find enough space to lob goalkeeper Frank Fielding from a similar distance to the two home goals.

The hosts almost regained their two-goal advantage on 55 minutes, when Magnusson found space down the left, to aim his low shot just wide of the far post.

Forest did show some more attacking intent as the game progressed, with Murphy in particular looking hungry.

However, their push for an equaliser left them increasingly exposed in defence. Firstly, Nathan Baker should have done better with a volley that went wide of the post.

Bryan was unable to add a second on 84 minutes, after striking a cross by Josh Brownhill wide.

The game started to see some tough challenges, especially from an increasingly anxious Forest outfit that had yet to find the goal for the second time.

Smith was forced into another save with two minutes remaining, when he was able to get down low and clear away a shot by substitute Matty Taylor.
