Bomb squad called to detonate ‘suspicious package’

Police have closed roads around Battersea Bridge in London this afternoon after finding a ‘suspicious item’ in a car. 

Officers were responding to reports of a man collapsed behind the wheel of the vehicle and when he was taken to hospital, they discovered the ‘suspicious item’ in his car. 

Roads around the area have now been closed and people are being warned to stay away from the scene.

A spokesman for the Metropolitan Police said: ‘Police were called on Sunday, 17 December shortly before 13:40 hours to a report of a man who had collapsed in behind the wheel of a car in Prince of Wales Drive junction with Albert Bridge Road. 

‘Officers attended along with the London Ambulance Service. The man [no further details] has been taken to a central London hospital. 

‘We await an update on his condition. Upon searching the vehicle, an item was found by officers which is being treated as suspicious. 

‘The item is currently being assessed. Cordons and road closures have been put in place as a precaution.’

One Twitter user wrote: ‘I’m away from it now. Live not far away though and can hear a lot of sirens. Just stay clear I would. Standstill traffic all along Park Road & connecting roads. Nothing going through there at all.’
