A woman has had a miraculous escape after she was trapped for two days down a mine shaft in outback New South Wales.

The 26-year-old was rescued from the eight-metre deep vertical tunnel in Lightning Ridge on Sunday after being located by emergency services.

She had gone missing from her home on Friday, with serious concerns held as temperatures soared to more than 40C over the weekend.

The woman was located around 10.20am by officers from the Western Region Rescue Unit, who used a drone to pinpoint her position.

She was found eight-metres down a mine shaft before an officer assisted in bringing her to the surface using a pulley and harness.

The woman was provided water following her ordeal and was taken to Lightning Ridge Hospital in a stable condition.

It is believed she tripped and fell down the mine shaft sometime Friday during a late-night walk, police said.
