Smoke billows as huge fire erupts at former school

Around 30 firefighters were today battling a huge fire at a former school that was closed three years ago. 

Eight engines were dispatched to the site of old Grays School, in Newhaven, East Sussex after the blaze took hold before 10.48am.

Huge plumes of black smoke billowed from the vacant building as nearby residents were warned to keep their doors and windows shut. 

The school, which closed in 2014, was said to have been visited by squatters, a witness told The Argus, in Brighton.

The cause of the fire is not known but East Sussex Fire and Rescue said a fire investigation will arrive on site tomorrow.

Firefighters are now scaling down the operation and are currently tackling flare-ups and small pockets of flames.
