It alternate opening: Pennywise hands back Georgie’s boat

  • Film editors put a new spin on one of the movie’s most iconic, horrific scenes
  • In the scene, Georgie’s interaction with Pennywise has a very different ending
  • The gag scene was created as a bonus feature for the It remake’s blu-ray release

The It crew created an alternate opening for the blu-ray release of the latest remake of Stephen King’s classic horror tale.

The scene, which is included in the movie’s January 9 blu-ray, puts a unexpectedly hilarious spin on what has long been acknowledged as a particularly horrific and iconic scene in which a little boy comes to a bad end after listening to a clown in a sewer.

In the clip, which was obtained by Entertainment Weekly, Little Georgie Denbrough — wearing a bright yellow coat — can be seen running in the rain, crying ‘No!’ as he chases after a paper boat that has sailed into the gutter.

In the alternate movie opening, Pennywise is crestfallen when he fails to catch hold of Little Georgie when he snatches the paper boat out of Pennywise’s hands

When he peers into the gutter, he is startled by a pair of glowing eyes, belonging to Pennywise the Dancing Clown. The creepy clown holds out the boat, asking if Georgie would like to have the boat back. Georgie says ‘Yes,’ prompting Pennywise to urge him to reach into the gutter and take it back.

Georgie reaches in to retrieve the paper boat and that’s when the alternate opening makes a radical departure from what actually happens in the movie.

Without spoiling it, the end result is a disappointed clown, a happy kid and what would have been a much shorter movie if that was the actual direction filmmakers had gone.

When asked about the alternate movie opening, Pennywise actor Bill Skarsgard told EW that he didn’t remember shooting that version of the scene, but that it was a ‘funny’ idea.

It’s been speculated that the clip was created using pieces of different outtakes from the movie.

The gag scene is among one of many bonus features that will be included on the blu-ray release.
