A crime against fashion? Republican Kevin McCarthy’s navy suit and brown shoes slammed on Twitter

Twitter was divided over whether wearing brown shoes with a dark suit was acceptable after Kevin McCarthy recently wore the combination.

The Republican politician, 57, from California, United States, was pictured next to Donald Trump yesterday after the former president supported him to become the next Speaker of the House.

The House of Representatives was in the middle of electing a new leader after the Republicans took control of the lower house in the midterm elections in November.

But instead of focusing on the politics, tweeters pulled apart Mr McCarthy’s suit and choice of footwear.

The Republican politician was snapped wearing a navy blazer and trousers, a white open collared shirt and brown shoes while Donald Trump donned a blue suit, a white shirt, a yellow tie and black shoes.

One Twitter user wrote:  ‘I worked in the US for three years, the American man loves a foot in tan! Still think it looks weird with a dark suit.’

A second added: ‘Never brown in town.’ A third joked: ‘Black shoes work with everything. Brogues attract mud. Brown says “I am having a day off”.’

Meanwhile, a fourth said: ‘So many blokes wear Brown shoes with dark attire, as you say. Apparently, its fashionable these days, but I think it makes them look ridiculous.’

A few social media users defended the combination, with one tweeter writing: ‘I love brown shoes with a dark suit, though suspect that’s not what’s really important here.’

Another added:  ‘I wear mid-brown brogues and a matching belt from Church’s with my dark blue suit. Looks good.’

And a final Tweeter wrote: ‘European men wear brown shoes with dark suits/pants all the time.’

Many famous celebrities and footballers in the past have been spotted wearing navy suits and brown shoes.

The news comes after a partner at a top international law firm set Twitter alight in 2019 after warning ‘unsuitably dressed trainees’ against wearing brown shoes with a blue suit.

Speaking at Thomson Reuters’ ‘Transforming Women’s Leadership in the Law’ conference at London’s Hilton Tower Bridge hotel last week, the unnamed city lawyer reportedly told juniors: ‘Don’t wear brown shoes with a blue suit’.

Legal affairs journalist Catherine Baksi attended the event and tweeted about the lawyer’s advice that he was passing on to ‘unsuitably dressed trainees’.

Ms Baksi said the comments had been directed towards people from non-traditional backgrounds who perhaps would not know ‘unspoken dress code rules’.

She told the Telegraph: ‘It’s for the dress code law to change,’ not the candidates.

But back in 2020 a GQ expert advised people to ignore this alleged cardinal sin.

They said: ‘The idea that brown shoes should not be worn with blue suits in the city still pervades in some industries and is, generally speaking, a load of tosh.

‘OK, an electric-blue suit worn with fudge-hued loafers will make you look like you canvass for Nigel Farage but a midnight-blue suit worn with chocolate-hued Oxfords can look equally as elegant as any combination of greys and blacks.’
