A VERY Good Friday! Revellers hit the town as they enjoy sunny four-day weekend

Easter bank holiday weekend celebrations are in full swing after boozy revellers hit the town last night to kick off a sunny four-day weekend.

Before heading into town for a booze-up last night, Britons basked in the sun of the hottest day of the year so far on Good Friday, with London reaching 22C (71F), beating some European destinations, including Athens at 21C (70F) and Majorca at 20C (68F).

The long and sunny weekend saw partygoers hit the UK’s pubs, bars and clubs, with some dressed in an Easter theme by donning bunny rabbit ears.

Many revellers donned tiny dresses and crop tops to welcome the warmer temperatures, with others wearing fancy dress for the occasion.

But after last night’s antics, many of those festive Easter bunnies will have very sore heads today.

In Newcastle, one group of lads on a night out dressed as chefs, another wore golfing outfits complete with sun visors and argyle golf jumpers, and a stag-do party all wore cardboard masks of the soon-to-be-groom’s face.

A bride-to-be, also in Newcastle, wore luminous orange accessories with a bridal white mini tutu, bra and veil, complete with a hen do sash across her, carrying a blow-up sex doll.

This year’s Easter Bank Holiday weekend is the first one back to normality after the two years of Covid lockdowns and restrictions put a stop to the UK’s social lives.

Britons are to bask in the sunshine a little longer as the across a baking hot Easter weekend after the mercury hit 71F (22C) in London on Good Friday and people flocked to beaches and other beauty spots.

But the warm weather will not be limited to the UK capital, with mercury predicted to reach the high teens in northern areas including Yorkshire and parts of Scotland.

Met Office meteorologist Steven Keates declared: ‘It’s looking like Friday will be the warmest day of the year with highs of 22 to 23C, probably most likely in London.

‘The current highest temperature is 20.8C which was recorded in two places – St James Park in London on 23 March and Treknow in Cornwall on 25 March – so we should beat that tomorrow. Widely, it will be quite a warm day.’

Mr Keates said although there may not be uninterrupted blue skies, most areas of the UK would enjoy sunny spells and high temperatures.

As many as 21.5million leisure journeys are set to take place across the UK’s road network this weekend, with the M25 clockwise around Surrey, the A303 near Stonehenge, and the M6 northbound from Liverpool to the Lake District among the RAC’s congestion hotspots. It comes as millions of drivers are expected on the roads today in what is predicted to be the busiest travel day of the Easter weekend.

Meanwhile, rail passengers also face across England this weekend, with 530 seperate engineering works taking place across the weekend.

Network Rail is undertaking the massive £83million project this weekend to avoid disruption for weekday commuters.

But that didn’t stop the Easter weekend festivities last night, with party people enjoying the summertime temperatures after a day of sunshine for much of the UK.
