NFL superstar and Green Bay Packers legend Aaron Rodgers has admitted for the first time that he has used the psychedelic drug ayahuasca again this offseason.

Rodgers, 38, made waves across the world earlier in the summer when he credited his back-to-back MVP awards to the effects of the Amazonian psychedelic drug, which he first used on a trip to Peru in 2020.

Now, the quarterback has admitted to dabbling in ayahuasca again this year, and even insisted he has only enjoyed playing football since using the hallucinogenic.

‘For me, it just came down to a high school best friend and I, having a round of golf and talking about his recent ayahuasca experience,’ Rodgers explained on The Pat McAfee Show. ‘Jordan, he inspired me to do it, because I was searching for a deeper level of self-love.

‘I went down to Machu Picchu in Peru and had magical experiences there, in the Sacred Valley. I had a couple of really interesting nights on the medicine and came back a changed person.

‘I wanted to leave myself open to doing that again in a different setting, in a different place, with a different group. I ended up doing that again this offseason and had an absolutely beautiful experience. Sat for more nights this time, two the first time, three the second time.

What is Ayahuasca?

Ayahuasca is a hallucinogenic drink that is illegal in the UK and US but widely used by tribal societies in the Amazon basin.

Shamans consider ayahuasca a ‘wisdom’ plant that allows an entry into the spiritual world, and it was recognised as such by the government of Peru in 2008.

It can cause hallucinations that are similar to the effects of LSD or magic mushrooms, according to Talk to Frank. They last for two hours and are ‘usually pleasurable’ but can cause panic and horrifying flashbacks, the website says.

The negative emotional effects from taking ayahuasca can last for days, and make it especially dangerous for people with mental health problems.

It can also raise blood pressure and heart rate and may harm those with a pre-existing heart condition.

‘I had a really difficult night one, beautiful night two and then a mixed bag night three with a really beautiful conclusion to the ceremony. It changes the way you look at the world… you feel may more connected.’

Incredibly, Rodgers – who is about to enter his 18th season in the NFL – then went on to admit that he has only enjoyed playing football since he began to use the drug.

When asked if he was now enjoying the sport, he replied: ‘I’ve been enjoying it since I did ayahuasca… the last few years have been great.

‘Mental health, bro, starts with self-love. When you increase that, you’re able to pass that on more easily.

‘I can say with honesty to my detractors and haters, I don’t have bitterness towards you, I have nothing but love and appreciation for where you’re at in your life and all the different emotions that impact our personalities and our decision-making and our belief system on a day-to-day basis.

‘It allows me to relate to my coaches better, to my teammates better, to my close friends and loved ones better. And really most importantly, it’s not selfish, but to relate to myself.

‘All the projections that I put on myself, to really shed those, and to find a deep and transformative self-love for everything that I am and everything that I’m not.’

The Packers and Rodgers face the Minnesota Vikings on week one of the season next Sunday.
