Abandoned Birmingham six-bedroom home turned into a tip

A six-bedroom house on a leafy street has been turned into a rubbish tip after tonnes of waste were dumped in the front garden.

Neighbours of the £200,000 property in Birmingham have been left fuming after lorries deposited household waste, car parts and even large tractor tyres.

The stinking pile has been growing over two weeks, and on Sunday a skip full of rubbish was left on the front drive.

The windows have been smeared with paint to stop people from seeing inside and several tiles are missing from the roof.

Furious residents on leafy Church Lane in Handsworth blasted the ‘disgusting dump’ and fear that rats and other vermin will soon be crawling through the pile.

They are also worried that the tires could go up in flames causing huge amounts of damage.

Firefighters, police and council officers have all visited the site but they have all been left powerless to act as the dump is on private land.

A female neighbour, 29, who lives with her children, said: ‘It’s disgusting! Everything is horrid. It’s a lot of rubbish.

‘It’s not like a few bags here and there. It’s massive and it’s everywhere.

‘Of course I’m worried about my children walking past it. When you pass by, it smells horrid.

‘The rats are a main concern. I keep all my doors closed, all the time, because I don’t want them coming into my house.

‘I hope it doesn’t get worse, but there’s still plenty of room for more.

‘I’m not sure whose responsibility it is to clear it, but it should be cleared as soon as possible.

‘When they were dropping the skip we noticed the windows of the house were broken so we don’t know what’s happened to it, to go from a normal, lived-in house to a rubbish dump.’

One male neighbour, who did not wish to be named, said: ‘I really want it cleared up soon. It’s a disgusting dump.

‘It’s been there for the past two weeks, with the huge container being left there on Sunday.

‘When it arrived I was relieved because I thought they were going to clear everything away, but instead they left it and drove off. It filled me with dread.

‘When the weather is warm it smells disgusting, but what I’m most worried about are the tires leaning against the house.

‘It’s a huge fire hazard. All it takes is for one trouble maker to come along with a lighter and it will all go up in flames. You have no idea what how toxic the fumes might be.

‘The police, fire brigade, and council have all come out to look at it, but we are none the wiser about what will happen with it.

‘We’ve just been told it’s being dealt with as a matter of urgency.’

According to residents, the house has been at the centre of a long-running civil dispute which has seen several families come and go and at least one evicted.

However, it is reportedly the first time that the house has been left in such a state.

Another neighbour, who asked not to be identified, said: ‘I’m worried that the next thing that’ll happen is others will come and add to it. It’s a free for all.

‘People have been in and out of the house all the time. The last people there were a family who moved out just before the rubbish started being dumped.. There was a lot of bad blood.

‘The containers of rubbish have been coming and dumping for the last two weeks, stopping in on the road and blocking the pavement and causing traffic. It’s the main ring road, so it’s a danger to anyone walking round.

‘I’m concerned with the tyres because they’re a potential for a fire. And the waste that’s on there has potential for rats and rodents. And not only that, it’s toxic. God only knows what’s in there.

‘It’s been reported to the council but it hasn’t really helped. They said it’s the responsibility of the landlord.

‘The fire brigade and police were over there when the skip turned up two days ago, just to check everything was okay.

‘But because it’s not on the pavement or public road, they said it’s okay. That’s it.’

Tony Quigley, Head of the Waste Enforcement Unit at Birmingham City Council, said: ‘We have served an enforcement notice on the property’s owner but this is not a straightforward case, which is why we need people to come forward with information that will enable us take action against those responsible for this flytipping.

‘We are aware that residents have seen and identified the vehicle used to dump waste on the property’s driveway – but we need their evidence to investigate the perpetrators.’
