A popular television presenter has made a surprising career move, ditching journalism to work for a big business conglomerate.

ABC TV presenter Lara Hyams announced she would be leaving the national broadcaster to work for liquor giant Endeavour Group.

Endeavour Group is Australia’s largest poking machine operator and  retail drinks network and owns Dan Murphy’s and BWS while also running the country’s largest portfolio of licensed hotels.

Endeavour’s 344 pubs own 2,400 poker machines, making it the largest owner of poker machines in Australia.

Ms Hyams worked at the ABC as a weather and news presenter for 10 years after starting at the public broadcaster back in 2013.

She was a regular on the ABC News Breakfast program, alongside hosts Michael Rowland and Lisa Millar.

Ms Hyams revealed her sudden career change on Twitter on Friday, garnering plenty of support from admirers and fellow journalists.

‘Moving out day from @abcnews! Bye roomie,’ she tweeted, alongside a photo of fellow ABC TV journalist Jeremy Fernandez.

‘Starting with Endeavour Group on Monday!’

Ms Hyams then shared a farewell note from a fellow ABC journalist that revealed some sage advice she’d given the young reporter 10 years ago.

‘Dear Lara, Best of luck with the next chapter,’ the note read.

‘I’ll never forget you encouraging me to take advantage of the buffet at a mining [conference] when I was on work experience with you.’
