ABC star Leigh Sales is set to expand her career in a new TV role after leaving the network’s current affairs show 7:30 in 2022.
The veteran journalist, 50, has been approached by producers of the ABC drama series The Newsreader to appear in a cameo role in season three, reports New Idea.
The popular series explores the professional and personal lives of Australian journalists working in a newsroom in the 1980s and discusses real life events from the era.
An insider told the magazine production staff think that Leigh having a small role on the show is a ‘fun idea’ and speculate she could play a colleague of one of the main characters.
Last year, Sales revealed on Instagram the show’s creator Michael Lucas had reached out to her to discuss her experiences as a junior journalist breaking into the industry.

‘Some of my experiences went into the characters,’ Leigh wrote at the time and admitted she also had discussed the show on her podcast.
From 2011 – 2022, Sales had one of the most high-profile jobs in Australian TV as host of the ABC’s 7.30 program.
But after stepping away from her role in June 2022, Sales has been keeping busy by spending more time with her two sons James and Daniel.

‘They want me home with them before 8.30pm and I don’t think that’s too much for two little boys to ask,’ she said at the time of her resignation.
Sales had earlier taken a six-week break to homeschool her kids in 2021 during the Covid pandemic – highlighting the pressure she faced heading a national program and being a single mother.
In her post-7:30 Report life, Sales has been keeping herself busy hosting the ABC docuseries Australian Story.
‘It means a lot to me to host this program, mostly because I’ve always thought it’s brilliant,’ she told the ABC.
In addition to her television endeavours, Sales has embraced the world of podcasting with her show ‘Chat 10 Looks 3’, which she co-hosts alongside ABC journalist Annabel Crabb. The show covers the world of literature.
‘I also have a book coming out later this year that I started during lockdown. It’s called Storytellers: Questions, Answers and the Craft of Journalism,’ she told the ABC.
As for her love life, Sales says she prefers to ‘keep it under the radar’ following her split with ex husband Phil Willis in 2016 after 20 years together.
