AC/DC’s Malcolm Young’s Sydney neighbours talk

Young, pictured, died on November 18 – his family stayed in the Balmain home before his funeral

AC/DC guitarist Malcolm Young didn’t bring the chaos that comes with rock and roll home with him – in fact he lived a quiet life, his neighbours said.

The only time they got a glimpse into his professional life was when he would belt out music from the attic-based studio of his Balmain East home, in Sydney’s inner west.

Young, who was laid to rest on Tuesday after a three-year battle with dementia considered the home as a place to escape his celebrity life.

Young, who was a co-founder of AC/DC, was known as one of the greatest guitarists on earth.

As Young’s family prepared to say goodbye to the world-famous rhythm guitarist on Tuesday, his neighbours looked back at memories of having the rock god next door, and recalled his generous offer to let them use his swimming pool if they wished.

‘It wasn’t what you would expect – he didn’t have wild parties – and most of the time you only knew he was home if you heard him jamming in his studio,’ one neighbour told Daily Mail Australia.

‘When we did see him or Angus up on the verandah there it would be a bit of a novelty, Malcolm mostly came at Christmas time – he would spend a few weeks.’

The huge mansion is surrounded by a 12-foot sandstone fence – with security fencing and an imposing wrap-around verandah on the second floor.

The home is believed to be worth around $30million, according to local real estate agents, and takes up a huge block set back one street from the water.

Neighbour say it was ‘always nice’ when music could be heard coming from the ‘studio in the sky’ which looked over Sydney Harbour.

‘The last time was a while ago now – but it was a really heavy rift – they were always very good.’

The entire home is surrounded by landscaped gardens with trees providing even more privacy than the impenetrable fences.

But neighbour said the family wasn’t reclusive, but they were quiet and kept to themselves.

‘They would say hello, he was just a normal person, you would see him in the street or heading into town,’ one woman said.

‘They would have neighbours over sometimes – let them use the pool and the outside entertaining area that they weren’t putting to use.’

The home boasts a swimming pool, jacuzzi area and outside kitchen – perfect for entertaining.

It once had a tennis court as well but that was replaced with more gardens ‘a few years ago’.

Despite not living in the home full-time the AC/DC legend kept it up to scratch.

When we moved in here 20 years ago he was doing major renovations.

‘There were trucks here every day for a few years fixing up the place,’ a neighbour said.

The newest addition to the home, according to the neighbour, is a security camera pointed toward the harbour.

‘It is there so he can have a live stream of the harbour in his loungeroom,’ he said.

‘The view would be spectacular from the roof – I mean if you can see the house from the harbour bridge imagine what the camera would pick up.’

The home was also believed to have been renovated in the ’50s or 60s’ and had a ‘remarkable’ history according to one neighbour.

‘It was originally a one-storey home – the second storey and verandah were added later.

‘A well-known scientist owned it then – and it has a link to a well-known murder the Bogle-Chandler murder,’ neighbour said.

Dr Gilbert Bogle and Mrs Margaret Chandler were murdered on New Year’s Day in 1963 – in the hours before their deaths they had been partying in the old home.

‘They didn’t die there but they were certainly there that night.’

Neighbours believe the property is predominately home for Young’s son Ross. On Tuesday, before Young’s funeral at St Mary’s Cathedral, family met at the house.

By 10.30am cars had arrived to pick them up and take them to the service.
