The pair dated from 1997 to 2001 with the romance leading Levine to create tracks such as She Will Be Loved and Harder to Breathe.
The hit track, This Love, was written about the day of the pair’s breakup in 2001 and was one of the many songs that fans across the world grew to love when the album dropped in 2002.
In a 2004 interview with Rolling Stone, Levine claimed to be reluctant to speak about Herman but told the magazine: ‘I saw this girl at a gas station, and I fell in love with her. I wrote a song about her and played it in the store where she worked.
‘It was an awful song. But she found out about this relatively psychotic boy. She was my muse for years… And then it kind of faded away.’
Herman, who went on to write for Vogue and set up her own fashion label called The Only Jane, is now married to film director Marc Webb, 47, and has two children of her own: Georgia, four, and Walter, one.

Songs About Jane’s instant success meant Levine soon found himself moving on from the breakup in style after he was linked to tennis star Maria Sharapova in 2005 and singer Jessica Simpson in 2006.

‘I mean my morals were unknowingly compromised. I was completely manipulated,’ she said in the TikTok video that has now gone viral.
She explained that she never planned on addressing the situation in such a public manner and was aware of the consequences of being ‘tied to a story like this.’

On Tuesday, Levine released a statement to TMZ and said: ‘ I used poor judgment in speaking with anyone other than my wife in ANY kind of flirtatious manner. I did not have an affair, nevertheless, I crossed the line during a regrettable period of my life.
‘In certain instances it became inappropriate. I have addressed that and taken proactive steps to remedy this with my family.’
He continued: ‘My wife and my family is all I care about in this world. To be this naïve and stupid enough to risk the only thing that truly matters to me was the greatest mistake I could ever make. I will never make it again. I take full responsibility. We will get through it and we will get through it together.’
