Adam Peaty-led Team GB narrowly miss out on a medal in the 4x100m medley relay… with the USA suffering defeat in the event for the first time in their history as China triumph

  • Team GB narrowly missed out on a medal in the men’s 4x100m medley relay
  • Despite an inspired effort from Adam Peaty, Britain ultimately finished fourth
  • China secured the gold in Paris, marking the first time the USA lost in the event

Team GB finished fourth in the men’s 4x100m medley relay on Sunday evening to narrowly miss out on a medal.

In the final men’s swimming event of the games in Paris, Oliver Morgan was tasked with getting his team off to a strong start in an event the USA and China were expected to vye for gold.

Adam Peaty has been struggling with illness in recent days and missed out on the mixed relay but produced a strong swim following a superb takeover to keep Team GB in the running.

Peaty’s process in the breaststroke briefly moved Britain after 200m but Duncan Scott and Matthew Williams were unable to keep their team in the medal places as a raucous home crowd willed France into third.

The event went right down to the wire but an incredible finish from Pan Zhanle saw China claim gold with a time of 3:27.46.

The USA were forced to settle for silver with 3:28.01, marking the first time in the country’s history they were defeated in the event.

The only other time the USA did not win the 4x100m medley relay since the event was introduced in 1960 was during the 1980 games in the Soviet Union which they boycotted.
