A 23-year-old father who had been expecting triplets with his partner has died after he was struck by two cars in a hit-and-run on Christmas Day.

John Mumme, from Adelaide, was walking on John Rice Avenue in Elizabeth Vale around 7.30pm when he was hit by a white Mitsubishi Lancer and a Holden sedan. 

The young father died at Royal Adelaide Hospital overnight after suffering ‘critical injuries’, police said. 

A female driver of the Lancer, which was towed from the scene, cooperated with officers in their investigation, but the driver of the second vehicle remains at large.

Authorities are now appealing for information on the motorist and have asked crash repairers who come across a dark Holden sedan with front end damage to contact police.  

Mr Mumme’s sister has remembered him as a ‘great dad’ and ‘amazing brother,’ and revealed he had just learned he and his partner were due to have triplet girls.

‘He was a great dad to his kids, anything he would do for the kids, he would do it,’ she told 9News tearfully. 

‘His girlfriend is due to have triplets and he just found out that they are three girls. He was excited.’

The site of the crash remained shut for several hours while police examined the scene. 

It reopened after 1am on Boxing Day.     

Mr Mumme’s death brings the number of lives lost on Adelaide roads this year to 108 compared 75 at the same time last year.
