Adelaide named ‘most beautiful in the world’ in prestigious Architectural Digest list – see the international destinations it beat to the top gong

Adelaide has been crowned the most beautiful city in the world by a prestigious design magazine, beating out some of the planet’s most popular destinations to the top spot.

The South Australian capital edged out several global cities including New York, Paris and Barcelona.

Tallinn, the capital city of Estonia, was rated the second most beautiful city followed by Portsmouth, an island city in the Caribbean nation of Dominica.

The list, which names 20 international destinations, was compiled by the globally renowned design magazine Architectural Digest.

The magazine described Adelaide as a place where visitors can ‘find surf, sand dunes and Art Deco architecture’.

‘Adelaide has rolling hills lush with high-quality grapes, making it the country’s wine capital.’

The list considered several factors such as architecture, historical relevance and natural appeal to compile list.

‘The best cities offer something that can’t be found anywhere else,’ the magazine stated.

Other cities that made the cut include Singapore, Amsterdam, Rio de Janeiro, and Florence in Italy.

Adelaide – known to Australians as the ‘city of churches’ – was also praised as home to iconic buildings and beautiful beaches popular among tourists.

St Peter’s Cathedral, which was built in 1904, is one of the most recognised landmarks in the city, located nearby to the famous Adelaide Oval.

Glenelg and Brighton Beach are renowned for stunning views of the ocean and dozens of popular cafes and restaurants.

The city is also the gateway to some of the world’s best wine regions including Adelaide Hills, McLaren Vale and the Barossa Valley.

The Barossa Valley consists of more than 170 wineries and is home to several famous producers such as Penfolds and Jacobs Creek.

The exclusive list comes despite Adelaide recently being ranked the ninth least affordable city in the world to buy a home.

The grim findings by the annual Demographia International Housing Report also ranked Sydney as the second least affordable city to live.

Melbourne also featured on top 10 list with Hong Kong taking out the top spot.
