Governor Jose Rosas Aispuro told a press conference the plane had tried to abort take-off due to bad weather but did so too late, and crashed into flames at the end of the runway.

A reporter for network Milenio said some passengers walked to a highway to seek help.

The crashed plane had 97 passengers and 4 crew members on board, according to Mexico’s transport minister.

Aeromexico said: ‘We have learned of an accident in Durango and we are working to verify the information and obtain details.’
