  • Port Adelaide AFL player Robbie Gray diagnosed with testicular cancer
  • Had surgery soon after season finished and will have a short course of chemo
  • He was expected to make a full recovery and be back by November training

Port Adelaide star Robbie Gray was diagnosed with testicular cancer just days after the AFL season finished.

The 29-year-old midfielder had surgery to remove the tumour and was expected to make a full recovery in time for pre-season training next month, the club said.

He will undergo a short course of chemotherapy as an ‘important’ precaution despite the surgery being successful.

‘The chemotherapy is a preventative measure to significantly reduce the chance of cancer returning,’ club doctor Mark Fisher said.

Power football manager Chris Davies said the club would do whatever necessary to support its three-time best and fairest winner and his family.

‘Robbie’s health and well being, as always, the most important thing to us,’he said.

‘We are thankful the surgery went as well as it could have. The treatment isn’t expected to interfere with Robbie’s ability to begin pre-season training in November.’

Gray played 178 games over 11 seasons with Port Adelaide, scoring 258 goals, after being drafted at number 55 in 2006.

He is no stranger to surgery after hyper-extending his knee in 2012 and requiring a full knee reconstruction.

Since then he made the All-Australian team three times, including this season.

Fellow AFL player Jesse Hogan had a testicular cancer tumour removed in May and was back playing for the Melbourne Demons nine weeks later.
