AFL star Toby Greene left with serious health problem after getting common souvenir on Thailand trip

Tourist warning as AFL superstar Toby Greene’s holiday tattoo in Thailand left him with a health problem so serious he texted his manager in a panic before flying home

  •  Toby Greene got serious infection while in Thailand
  • AFL star called his manager and boarded plane home
  • Condition was probably caused by a henna tattoo

A simple henna tattoo while holidaying in Thailand left Greater Western Sydney Giants captain Toby Greene with a leg infection so serious that he flew home immediately.

Greene’s former agent Mel Oberhofer confirmed her client’s brush with a medical disaster when she appeared on ex-footy player Tommy Sheridan’s podcast this week.

Sheridan, who was also a client of Oberhofer in his playing days, brought up the topic to explain why the agent was so great at her job.

‘I’m just going to read out why people love you,’ Sheridan said.

‘Toby Greene has given me permission to say this. He’ll never forget the level of care that you had for him and all your players; you’d always go over and beyond.

‘He’ll never forget the time you picked him up from the airport after he texted with some serious concerns boarding his flight home from Thailand.

‘He said, “There is something seriously wrong with my leg, Mel”. He reckons you were at home and he’s running out of reception – he reckons by the time he landed, you were at the airport waiting for him whilst he had no service on the plane and you rushed him to hospital where you then found he had a serious infection in his leg.

‘It was actually his birthday that day and he’ll never forget it; he reckons you calmed him down, you took him to hospital.

‘These are little insights that I’m sure are bringing back some memories.’

Oberhofer explained that the cause of the infection was probably a henna tattoo.

‘Moral of the story: don’t get a henna tattoo in Thailand,’ she laughed.

Oberhofer went on to say how proud she was to see Greene succeed in his career, with the GWS skipper now considered one of the game’s most popular players.

‘Toby’s gone through a bit of a rollercoaster in his career,’ she said.

‘Amazing footballer, but would never hurt a fly, and seeing him now become the captain and take on this role, it’s a proud mumma, big sister moment.

‘We always say that we’ve been siblings to each other this whole time. “Tobes” is special.’

Greater Western Sydney take on Hawthorn in the Gather Round in Adelaide on Sunday.
